How to Start a Vehicle Wrap & Graphics Business
Prepare a Business Plan
Write a business plan that addresses industry-specific issues regarding suppliers, installation procedures, business entity type, cash flow and expansion and marketing plans. You will need this plan to present to a lender to borrow money for startup costs and working capital.
Fulfill Tax and Licensing Requirements
Request an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service at IRS.gov. This number allows you to hire employees and establish a business checking account. Apply for a sales tax number with your state’s secretary of state’s office and apply for a local business license at your local city hall.
ase or purchase for installation. It needs to be clean, tall enough for a box truck (14 foot or taller) and well-ventilated as a lamination machine and some adhesives emit fumes that can be harmful to your employees. It needs to be climate controlled as a shop that is too cold will cause poor results in vinyl materials.
Hire Skilled Employees
Hire employees that have automotive detailing or repair experience. General carpentry, seamless siding and sheet metal skills are helpful as well. Computer and graphics design experience in at least one employee is critical.
Practice Wrapping Vehicles
Practice on your own vehicles. Create your own graphics and install them to market your business. Be sure it is installed well as poor installation will reflect poorly on your business.
Seek Complementary Partners
Partner with window tinting service providers and car detail shops, or add these services yourself as they are natural additions to your product line. Seek body shops and customer car dealers for leads and offer a referral bonus for finding clients for your business.
Market at Trade Shows
Market your offerings at car shows, fairs, trade shows and other outdoor events. Expand to cover semi trucks, box trucks, boats and other vehicles as you learn the industry. Wrap a single car hood with a 60 inch wrap for a demo model to take to trade shows that do not allow entire vehicles.
